Biodiesel New Zealand Ltd

Biodiesel New Zealand produces its high-quality fuel from two sources - used vegetable oil collected from restaurants and food processors throughout the country, and from locally grown oilseed rape crops.  High-quality biodiesel fuel is manufactured in Canterbury and supplied to fleet operators, fishing boats and tourism ventures whose owners appreciate its operational and maintenance advantages over mineral diesel.

The business aims to increase output to 70 million litres a year by 2011.  Increased use of Biodiesel will give New Zealand greater energy security and, as imported oil prices continue to rise, better affordability while reducing the transport sector’s environmental impact.

An independent report, by CRL Energy, shows that biodiesel from locally grown oilseed rape is sustainable, emitting around 50% less carbon dioxide over its life cycle than mineral diesel.

Biodiesel is a far better fuel for your engine, providing far superior lubricity (particularly to the injector pump) which makes engine components last longer.

Most vegetable oil based Biodiesels have a higher cetane rating than petroleum diesel, which contains many additives to try and achieve a high cetane rating.

In the 1970s the European market began setting standards for Biodiesel and now most western countries have national standards for Biodiesel. New Zealand’s standard -- NZS 7500: 2005 – is based quite closely on the Australian standard.
